Cheng has received Glimmertrain's Family Matter's Award for his short story, "The Boy," which will be published by Glimmertrain in August 2009.

Cheng is currently a part of the National Book Foundation's BookUpNYC program. BookUpNYC is a new program designed to motivate young people to stay involved with books and reading for pleasure throughout their middle school years, with the hope they will develop into lifelong readers. The program will introduce activities that emphasize reading as both fun and interactive.
